Area = length × width for each room, in feet. The total is the sum of every room. A 10 ft × 10 ft room is 100 sq ft.

How to calculate square footage

Square footage is just length times width, measured in feet. Measure each room, multiply the two numbers, and you have its area in square feet. A 10 ft by 10 ft bedroom is 100 sq ft; a 20 ft by 15 ft living room is 300 sq ft. To get a whole-home number, add every room together — three rooms of 100 sq ft each total 300 sq ft. The calculator above keeps a running total as you add areas.

  • Split odd shapes. For L-shaped rooms, hallways, or bump-outs, break the space into simple rectangles, add a row for each, and let the total do the math.
  • Measure in feet. If you measured in inches, divide by 12 first. Keeping every measurement in feet is the fastest way to avoid mistakes.
  • Add for waste on flooring. Tile and plank installs usually add 5–10% over the measured area for cuts and breakage, so order a little more than the raw total.

Turning square footage into a quote

Once you know the total, pricing per square foot is quick: total sq ft times your rate. A 1,800 sq ft home at $0.15 per sq ft is a $270 cleaning quote. The same math works for flooring and tile at their own rates. Per-square-foot pricing is a fast, defensible way to quote — but always confirm it clears your labor, materials, and margin. Who uses a square footage calculator

Cleaners size recurring and deep-clean bids by area, flooring installers estimate material and labor, and painters, landscapers, and janitorial crews all quote by the square foot. If you are standing up a cleaning operation, the fundamentals in how to start a cleaning business pair well with this tool. Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate square footage of a room?

Measure the length and width of the room in feet, then multiply them: area = length × width. A room that is 10 ft by 10 ft is 100 square feet. For an L-shaped or multi-room space, split it into rectangles, calculate each one, and add them together. This calculator does the addition for you.

How do I price a job per square foot?

Multiply your total square footage by your rate per square foot. If a house is 1,800 sq ft and you charge $0.15 per sq ft for a standard clean, the quote is $270. Flooring and tile installs work the same way at their own rate. Always confirm the price clears your labor, materials, and margin.

What is a typical price per square foot for house cleaning?

Standard residential cleaning commonly runs about $0.10–$0.25 per square foot, with deep cleans and move-outs higher. Rates vary by region, home condition, and frequency. Use the per-square-foot number as a fast estimate, then check it against your hourly cost before you send the quote.
